Jokes new Mayor Cllr. Pauline Tunnicliffe
Anna Crystal and Maria Alexander We were fortunate last night to be invited to the Bromley Mayoral making ceremony where each year the returning Mayor hands over the mantle and responsibilities, along with the car and other perks, to the new Mayor.
This year Bromley is lucky to have a young, vibrant and caring Mayor in the form of Cllr. Pauline Tunnicliffe. Although only a councillor for a year the Mayor mentioned that being Mayor must be in her blood as one of her ancestors was a Mayor in another town. In the speeches that followed we realized that the retiring mayor, Cllr. Charles Joel, had brought commitment and his own unique brand of humour to the role. It is a noble job and one heavy with responsibilities, not least of which being the rumour that each Mayor in their serving year puts on a stone and a half from all the buffets they are invited to!
In her speech the Mayor mentioned her delight and dedication to the job as well as naming her chosen charity which was Bromley Diabetes Support Group. She is a champion of women who are victims of domestic violence and is hoping to be an instigator in more community involvement. The Mayor chose her Deputy Mayor Cllr. Brenda Thompson who struck me as a very cheerful and hardworking lady. Its easy to see they have a warm camaraderie between them so it should be a fruitful year for the Mayor’s office. The event was followed by a reception in the Old Palace where we got a chance to congratulate the new lady mayor or Madam Mayor as she likes to be called (If her co-workers accidentally call her Mister Mayor she jokingly told them they will be charged £5 to her charity.) and wish her a happy forthcoming year in office. Many thanks to Jolanta Gudici (?) and Sue Watford, two glamorous and dynamic ladies whose support of this years Mayor will surely make it one of the best years ever. |
